Raising funds to renovate century-old temple

THE Kuil Buddha Poh Ka Committee is organising a food fair next year to raise funds for renovation work on the century-old temple at Jalan Uplands in Kuching.
The renovation costing about RM300,000 started on June 2 this year and is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

“We have collected about RM150,000 so far and we still need to collect another half,” committee deputy chairman Hong Boon Siong told a press conference yesterday.
A consecration ceremony of the Kwan Yin statue at the temple would be held on Dec 12.
After that, a fund-raising food fair featuring more than 30 stalls selling vegetarian food will be held on Jan 1 next year at the temple site.
In addition, devotees and members of the public are welcomed to light ‘four seasons lamp’ priced from RM38 to RM888 at the temple from next year onwards.
Built in 1900, work is ongoing to restore all historical architectural relics and maintain the temple in its original form, which include the existing antique door panels, windows and an abandoned well at the back.
In addition, Hong said the committee was planning to build a 930sq metre meditation centre next to it which would cost another RM700,000.
“We have already submitted the plan to the State Government to acquire the land for the construction of the centre. The project will commence once it is approved and after the renovation project finishes,” he said.
The names of the sponsors will be crafted on pillars, windows, rails, benches and roofing to acknowledge their contribution.
Devotees and members of the public can sponsor the 16 pillars at the temple at RM16,800 each while tiles are RM10 each.
Sponsorship for the 27 front ‘pakua’ rails are RM6,888 each and four smaller ones at RM2,888 each.
They can also choose to sponsor two front ‘pakua’ windows at RM8,888 each, two back ‘pakua’ windows at RM6,888 each and two wooden benches at RM8,888 each.

THE Tangsan Kwan Yin Temple at Jalan Upland in Kuching will move to its newly renovated premises today.
According to its management committee chairman Ngiaw Mui Khak, the renovation took place in June this year at a cost of RM300,000.
“The contribution for the renovation came from the devotees and well-wishers,” he told reporters yesterday.
“Previously, it was in a very shabby condition and was in urgent need of rebuilding,” he added.
The temple, which has over 130 years of history, he said, was managed by the Poh Ka Buddhist Temple.
“The consecration of the Kwan Yin statue to the newly renovated premises will be held in a grand ceremony where there will be lion and dragon dance performance.
“All devotees are urged to turn up for the ceremony,” he added.
